Big Anti-Online Gambling Action in South Africa

An internet café in Mashishing, which served as a cover for an online gambling venue was raided by the Mpumalanga Gambling Board and South African police authorities, on which occasion 20 computer terminals were confiscated and the venue shut down.

Bheki Mlambo of the Mpumalanga Gambling Board warned illegal online gambling operators that such activities hinder legitimate economic growth and flout existing gambling laws, and as such, “They are liable for prosecution and similarly anyone using these illegal services will also be prosecuted leading to a fine of up to R10 Million or up to 10 years of imprisonment or both.”

It was added by police spokesperson Col Leonard Hlati: “We are working hard to clampdown on these outlets as they appear to be a growing trend.”
